A new marriage law went into effect Tuesday, carrying with it a three-day waiting period after a marriage license is applied for. The new law caused no extra business at the probate judge’s office, Jay Hargett reports. During the last week in June, nine marriage licenses were issued.

Three cases of diphtheria, occurring at an unusual time of year, have been reported in Marion County to the county health department. The cases, apparently not related, are in Burns, Peabody, and Marion.

Two beautiful silk flags, the American flag and the Christian flag, were dedicated in an impressive service Sunday at the Methodist church. F.E. Good, pastor of the church, dedicated the flags in memory of five young men from the church who gave their lives in World War II, namely: Fred Anderson, Niles Siebert, James Ecker, Raleigh Bowlby Jr., and Howard Slifer.

Sidney Holder, who reached his 100th birthday June 16, passed away July 1 at his home.

Viola Thompson presented the following pupils in a piano recital last Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist church: Jeanette Russell, Judy Coons, Neva Stenzel, Nila Hoopes, Rowena Olsen, Margaret Williams, Caroline Susdorf, Janice Riffel, Darrel Riffel, Carol Kay Weyand, Wanda Lou Propp, Carol Krispense, Zona Elaine Kelsey, Juanita Kelsey, Larry Schlehuber, Patricia Kruse, Dwight Kruse, John Rupp, Marlys Rupp, and Karen Brodhead.

The Sub Deb Club met June 28 at the home of Anne Burkholder. New members being initiated were Violet Krispense, Jean Muse, Lucy Sandwell, Pat Brose, and Shirley Collett. This was followed by a slumber party at the country club.

A six-room house is being prepared next door north of Our Savior Lutheran Church for the occupancy of the Rev. Henry Knoke and his parents, the Rev. and Mrs. William Knoke.
