An office that in its 6½ years of existence directly touched the lives of more than 6,500 men in Marion County closed its doors last Monday.

Since the Selective Service office for Marion County opened Oct. 16, 1940, a total of 6,331 men were registered in six different registrations.

According to Ellen Garrison, clerk, the total number of men and women in military service from Marion County was 1,505, or 8½% of the total population.

Housewives and business houses in Marion are assured of ice this summer by the announcements of both Bud Pierce and Conyers Station that ice is available at docks and by delivery again this summer. Ice will be trucked in from Council Grove.

Commemorating the 60th anniversary of the year 1887, when the town of Durham was plotted by the Golden Belt Town Co. and the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad built through the state, residents of Durham are staging a two-day celebration May 28 and 29 that will be a high mark in her history.

Typing students of Tampa, in a recent nationwide test for high schools, made a median of 94, or better than 75% of those reporting. Phyllis Rhode led the typing class by qualifying for a 50-word-per-minute pin.

The Paul Seifert Motor Co. reports delivery of new cars to the following purchasers during the past week: Dr. O.C. McCandless, Chevrolet Fleetline four-door sedan; Ford Watson, Chevrolet Style Master sedan; Ollie Wight, Buick Special sedan; Menno Harder, Paul Minear, and John Phillips, Chevrolet Fleetline Aero sedans; James Vogel, Chevrolet Fleetline master sedan; Virgil Wiebe, Chevrolet Style Master town sedan.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Maggard are the parents of a son, Richard Loy, born Tuesday at the Marion hospital. Mrs. Maggard is the former Helen Kohls, daughter of Fred Kohls, who lives in the Elk neighborhood.
