Neighbors did a good turn for a well-liked Marion farmer, hospitalized Stanley Anderson, Monday afternoon when 16 friends turned out to bale his hay.

Using three balers, the group started on a 25-acre field about 1:30 p.m. The hay was all in the barn by 3:30 p.m.

Those doing the good neighbor work were Dale and Ben Anderson, Kerry Domke, Ed and Jack Goentzel, Junior Hett, Orville and Milford Hett, Jim Jackson, Clifford McFadden, John and Brad Olsen, Roy Penland, Steve Sandwell, Wilson Schwendiman, and John Siebert.

According to general chairman Roger “Bud” Hannaford, high school graduating classes in the years ending in 6 are planning reunion activities to coincide with other Old Settlers Day activities.

A tremendous lightning bolt, coming in the midst of a 1 a.m. rainstorm Sunday, hit Hallett Construction, formerly Riddle Quarries, striking a repair shop and welding shack southwest of Marion. Almost immediately it turned into a hot, searing fire.

Marion Fire Chief Hazel Meierhoff, John Britain, and Bud Pierce responded to the call and were instrumental in saving at least half a dozen lime trucks parked near the burning buildings.

Grand champion winners in the Marion County 4-H boys’ grooming and girls’ style revue are William Thomas of Marion Go-Getters and Maureen Riffel of Lincolnville Wide-Awakes.

It was revealed this week that extension and remodeling soon will be underway at Strassburg Baptist Church northwest of Marion. Included will be additional classrooms, a nursery, restrooms, and new entryway, plus repair and remodeling of the sanctuary.
