4 of 5 games are runaways

One close game and four routs marked last week in Marion County football.

Centre, Hillsboro, and Goessel all rolled to easy victories Friday while Marion suffered a close loss, and Peabody-Burns was on the losing end of the final rout.

Centre

It took the Cougars only 13 seconds to score their first touchdown Friday in a homecoming game against Burrton — Centre’s only home game of the season.

Santiago Knepp returned the opening kickoff to Burrton’s 25-yard line, and Luke Hudson carried it in from there on the first play from scrimmage.

The Cougars dominated the Chargers all night. Centre intercepted Burrton three times and scored on almost every possession.

In addition to Hudson’s four touchdowns, Nick Krch, Knepp, and Quinten Bina each scored a touchdown, and Bina twice ran for extra points.

Burrton turned the ball over on downs often and scored its only touchdown on a 15-yard pass early in the second quarter. Centre led 40-7 at the half.

Matthew Basore ran for a final touchdown, ending the game based on a 45-point mercy rule. The final score was 53-7.

Centre rushed for 248 yards compared to 38 for Burrton, but Burrton dominated in the air, 114 yards to 47. Hudson was the leading rusher, with 176 yards. He also had two receptions for 47 yards.

Hudson and Bina were honored as seniors at halftime.

The Cougars are 2-1 on the season and will play Saturday against Western Plains at Bushton.

Goessel

The Bluebirds defeated Moundridge, 42-22, amassing 461 yards of offense.

Goessel began the scoring with a Grant Bryant 23-yard pass to Caiden Duerksen. The Bluebirds crossed the goal line again early in the second quarter on a 15-yard Bryant pass to Skyler Wuest.

Moundridge countered with a 49-yard scoring, but Kacen Smith responded by sprinting 61 yards through the line for a Goessel score.

The Wildcats answered with a 47-yard scording run before Smith exploded again for 44 yards, leaving Goessel up 28-14 at the half.

The Bluebirds scored first in the second half with Wiens throwing to Wuest for 31 yards.

Moundridge ground out yardage in a long drive that ended in an 8-yard scoring run, but Goessel had an answer when Wiens went 41 yards for another score.

A huge stop by the Bluebird defense early in the fourth quarter pushed Moundridge out of bounds on the one yard line, and Goessel took over on downs.

The Bluebirds were content to run the clock and preserved their 20-point lead as neither team scored in the fourth quarter.

Hillsboro

A balanced game of 124 yards rushing and 164 yards passing from senior Matthew Potucek plus 137 rushing yards from freshman Anders Weisbeck powered Hillsboro to a 62-0 homecoming rout of Haven.

Senior Jamari Harris scored four touchdowns, senior Frank Wichert scored two, and Potucek and junior Jacob Thiessen rounded out the touchdown scoring. Wichert also kicked seven extra points.

Senior Tristan Rathbone led the way defensively with 12 total tackles, including five solo. Thiesen had 10 total tackles, seven solo.

Hillsboro and Haven use different balls, so when possession of the ball switched, a trio of boys younger than 10 would ran onto the field to switch the football in use. One of their dads supervised and explained plays from the sidelines.

On the sideline, inactive players signaled in plays by holding up four double-sided signs with pop culture icons including Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario, Taco Bell food, the McDonald’s logo, and lions and tigers from various media.

The symbols correlated to note cards attached to players’ wrist guards and allowed the coach to communicate without having to huddle up or send in substitutes with messages.

Players said the images also were designed to throw off Haven.

Hillsboro’s next game will be Friday in Marion, where admission will be a canned good to be continued to Marion County’s food bank.

Marion

Marion lost 21-18 on the road to Hutchinson’s Trinity Catholic High School.

“We just need to continue to concentrate on doing the little things right, doing our assignments, and giving great effort and attitude,” interim head coach Jordan Metro said. “We do those things and we will continue heading in the right direction as a team.”

Sophomore Trevor Schafers was the top performer both offensively and defensively, Metro said.

“He topped 100 yards again in the game,” he said. “He ran extremely physical all game. He is really coming into his own defensively, as well. I think the Hutch game was probably the best defensive performance of the year for him.”

The Warriors struggled to get lined up and adjusted to Trinity’s offense, Metro said.

“We are better defensively than what showed Friday, and that’s my fault as defensive coordinator,” he said. “We gave them too many second chances.

“When you are facing a good, fundamentally sound team like Hutch, you can’t allow these things to happen or they will capitalize — which is what they did.”

The Warriors will face Hillsboro next Friday at home.

Peabody-Burns

Despite 103 yards rushing and an interception by senior Noal Reynolds, the Peabody-Burns Warriors were scalped 66-20 Friday by the South Barber Chieftains at Kiowa.

The Chieftains jumped out to a 46-14 lead in the first quarter and outscored Peabody-Burns in the second and third quarters, as well, until the game was called.

Senior Thomas Smith had 14 carries for 56 yards and was the team’s leading tackler with 10. Senior Thomas Smith and junior Tanner Parks combined to go 3 for 5 passing.

South Barber out-rushed Peabody-Burns, 243 to 155 yards, and had a huge advantage with 193 passing yards to Peabody-Burns’ 80.

The Warriors, now 3-2, will be play host to undefeated Caldwell at homecoming Friday.

Staff writers Mindy Kepfield, Rowena Plett, Delbert Peters, Eric Meyer, and Madeline Reida contributed to this report.
