Construction on a small stretch of the U.S. 56 relocation project may be temporarily halted while Indian artifacts are excavated.

The artifacts indicate a huge Quivira village was in Clear Creek’s valley before the coming of Cortez.

The area is a 100-yard-long, 30-yard-wide tract that has never been disturbed near the Kansas Department of Transportation building on N. Cedar St.

The 78th annual Old Settlers Day will sparkle with a variety of activities. The parade theme is “125 Come Alive” reflecting Kansas’ 125th anniversary of statehood.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Meisinger of Beaverton, Oregon, are visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Meisinger. Robert will be attending the 30th anniversary of his high school class on Old Settlers Day.

Marion High School graduate John Dyck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Dyck, received his silver wings at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Oklahoma, completing a course in T-38 jets at the top of his class and earning the unit’s distinguished graduate award.

Commemorative community buckles will be available Saturday at Marion Chamber of Commerce. They feature the Hill School building, issued in 1984; Marion County Courthouse, issued in 1985; and the “Best Place I’ve Seen” seal, issued this year. They will sell for $15 each, or all three for $39.
