An outbreak of hard or red measles during the first weeks in January in nearby Harvey County is causing concern among local health and school officials. To prevent spread of the communicable disease, Marion County nurse Grace Utting is urging parents to ensure their children are immunized.

A large group of hungry people crowded Marion Senior Center for a community supper. The supper and craft sale benefited the senior citizen organization.

Marion Kiwanians watched a presentation of slides Monday covering the unusual subject of covered bridges. “Span Across Time” was the topic of the program given by Lloyd and Ellen Darrow. The Darrows shared photos of various covered bridges they have seen on travels across the nation.

Florence Elementary School’s top spellers will compete later this year in the Marion County Spelling Bee. Eighth graders who will take part in the building-wide spell-off are Tara Abbott, Brenda Bina, Kristy Herbel, Christine Laue, Reyes Martinez, Phil Humphries, Denise Meierhoff, Lorie Plenert, Chris Smith, Eric Stewar, Jennifer Thole, and Denice Winter.

Marion area scouts will no longer be collecting newspapers. The recycling market has dwindled, and it does not pay to collect papers.
