Even if you don’t own a horse, you are welcome to come to Marion during the Western Days promotion being sponsored by Marion Chamber of Commerce.

Stores will be stocked with special values that Saturday and a Jackpot Rodeo will start at 4 p.m. on the shodeo grounds arena in Marion Athletic Park (just behind the Goodyear building).

Events include open barrel racing, open team roping, breakaway roping, ribbon roping, calf scramble, cow milking, junior barrel racing, junior steer riding, and junior team roping.

Two of the six finalists in competition for homecoming royalty at Hutchinson Community College are from Marion. They are Neletha Nelson, daughter of Lois (Mrs. Ivan) Winter, and Janice Wiens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Wiens.

Elmer Leppke and many farmers can point with pride to their bumper feed crops this fall. The forage sorghum in Leppke’s field five miles south of Marion stands 10 feet tall and will probably make 40 tons of silage to the acre.

Tim Williams said his soybeans are making around 50 bushels to the acre this fall.

Robert Schaeffler, 92, longtime Hillsboro businessman and active worker in the American Legion, died Saturday at Salem Hospital. For many years he was mayor of Hillsboro, was associated with the First National Band, and operated the Schaeffler Mercantile Company.

Members of the Marion High School class of 1956 gathered on Old Settlers’ Day for their silver (25th) anniversary. Activities included a tour of high school facilities and a steak dinner at Valley United Methodist Church Following the meal, they went to the city building for an evening of visiting and entertainment, including a program by the MHS Swing Singers.
