The 84th annual Old Settlers Day in Marion kicks off Friday when one of the top Class 3A football teams in the state, the Marion High School Warriors, will host longtime rival Herington.

Theme of the parade on Saturday is “World War II: 50 Years Later,” and will include flyovers featuring vintage World War II military aircraft.

Three Marion Countians, Leo Scharenberg of Florence, Louis Vinduska of Pilsen, and Gene Obee of Burns, who were prisoners of war, will be recognized and ride at the head of the parade.

Marion High School homecoming king and queen candidates are Bill Griffith, Jamie Minier, Chris Darrow, Rachel Janzen, Jodi Thomas, and Amanda May. Homecoming ceremonies are set for Friday at halftime of the Marion-Herington football game.

Capt. John Dyck, a 1980 graduate of Marion High School, has been named “Superior Performer” as a participant in the 366th Wing Operational Readiness Inspection. Capt. Dyck earned the award for duties during the mock war against Canadian aircraft. He is the son of Harold and Neva Lou Dyck of Peabody.

Linda and Adolph Schmidt of Hillsboro are pictured as they pick up fresh fruit from Carol Dirks of Durham. Dirks, in her third season as a distributor of fresh fruit, sells from 200 to 400 boxes of fresh fruit each week. The fruit is distributed by Saxton’s Idaho Fruit and includes bing cherries, peaches, and plums.

Michelle Combs, Michelle Kahns, Jenny Beausoleil, Melissa Vinduska, Daniel Stuchlik, Shane Svitak, Kelly Steiner, and Kelly Wonser are Centre High School candidates of homecoming queen and king. Ceremonies are set for Friday before the football game with Hope.
