“Bigger and better” is the way many people described Marion’s 17th annual Art in the Park festival held Saturday. More than 15,000 people came to shop at the 196 arts and crafts booths set up in Marion’s Central Park —more than 40 more than last year.

A coverlet featuring historic Marion structures is now available from Kraft Korner, located in downtown Marion. Owner Brenda McGinness started work on the project in March.

Some featured structures include Marion County Courthouse, Elgin House Apartments, Marion Presbyterian Church, Hill Grade School, Marion Historical Museum, Bown-Corby School, and the antique fountain in Central Park.

Florence Middle School and the Parents Advisory Council offer a cash prize to students with no absences, and who maintain good grades. Recipients since the start of the year are Hallie Bennett, Melissa Garcia, Ryan Thomas, and Blake Conyers.

Marion County has received a $158,000 grant to make the courthouse full accessible. The project includes an elevator, entrance ramp, improvements to restrooms, improved electrical systems, and additional offices in the courtroom.

The Marion Warriors football team was defeated by Collegiate 21-18 Friday. ESPN’s cameras followed Collegiate’s running back DeAngelo Evans through warm-ups for a Scholastic Sports America presentation later this season.

The Warriors, however, earned statewide respect for their swarming defense and gritty, hard-nosed offense during a brilliant display of football and sportsmanship on the playing field in Wichita.
