Andrew Aaron Bennett, son of Kelli Bennett of Goessel, is the first baby of the New Year born at St. Luke Hospital in Marion. The 8 pound 5 ounces boy was born at 8:02 p.m. Jan. 2 and was 20 inches long.

The mountain dulcimer originated in the Appalachian Mountains and is produced today on the Kansas Plains. The Walnut Valley Dulcimer Company in Burns, started by Jack Bruner and a friend, has been making and selling the stringed instruments since 1985.

A New York City man is planning a biography of the Rev. Emil Kapaun, the Pilsen priest who died in a communist prison camp during the Korean War. Bill Maher, a lawyer in New York City, says he wants to write a biography of a modern American Catholic being considered for sainthood.

The Jim and Bill Darrow families and Betty Mull hosted a family celebration at the Lloyd Darrow home New Years’ Day in honor of the 50th wedding anniversary of Lloyd and Ellen Darrow.
