162 attend Florence alumni banquet

A total of 162 alumni, guests and teachers attended Florence’s 120th annual alumni banquet Saturday at Florence gymnasium.

Alumni traveled from Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas, Wyoming, and 22 towns in Kansas.

Of them, 27 came from Marion, 20 from Wichita, and 19 from Florence.

Graduates from the classes from 1971, 1966, 1961, 1956, 1951 and 1946 were recognized. All in all, classes from 1943 to 2016 were represented.

Mike Robinson, class of 1967, was master of ceremonies.

The Florence High School Alumni Association awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Sydnee Baldwin and heard from 2015 scholarship recipient Dylan Carpenter about his first year in college.

Reilly Reid, class of 1965 and commander of VFW Post 308, served the meal.

The 121st banquet is scheduled for May 27, 2017.

Florence High School alumni first met May 25, 1896, in the old Horner Hotel, electing Ralph W. Smith of the class of 1894 as the group’s first president.
