A quintet of county Catholic women recently made a 1,062-mile pilgrimage to bask in the serenity of sacred places and deepen their faith.

Jackie Palic of Marion had contemplated a journey to Trinity Heights and Grotto of the Redemption in Iowa for a year before such invited Marion friends Denice Bina, Laurie Holub, and Cindy and Rose Vinduska to join in the trip.

They started at Mass at the Cathedral of the Risen Christ in Lincoln, Nebraska, and included other stops on their trip.

Marion Parks and Recreation will sponsor a dominoes class Sept. 29 and tournament Oct. 1.

A new science-based swing in which toddlers and adults can swing face-to-face in a single unit is among the additions to Lincolnville City Park.

Other recent additions since Sherri Pankratz became a city council member and parks and recreation chairman are a fitness trail with 20 exercise station, a water fountain, new basketball goals, three new bouncy rides, a small bridge, and new landscaping.

Students returning to Centre and Marion schools were asked how they spent their summers. Their answers:

• Emil Godinez-Vinduska: “I went traveling to other places in this country and to Mexico.”
• Kamri Shipman Holbert: “Bailey the dog had to go up to Heaven.”
• Samantha Espinoza: “Our family went to Paris, and we went to the top of the Eiffel Tower. We also visited my father, who is in the Army in Germany.”
• Kaity Bina: “I spent time with my mom at school and helped her file papers and clean out the teachers’ lounge.”
• Kourtney Hansen: “I went to Oklahoma City to nationals for basketball. We did pretty well.”
• Victoria Boyd: “I went to Bible camp in Colorado. Our small group got to take a hike in the Rockies.”
• Jarred Rahe: “I hit a game-winning triple in one of our baseball games.”
• David Francis: “I got to see my father for the first time in five years. I went down to Florida.”
