Eli Dalke, 8 (almost 9) checks berries for ripeness on his mother’s strawberry barrel at Serendipity Gardens east of Hillsboro. Jana Dalke planted the barrel last year because she needed a way to keep her strawberry patch close to a water source. She drilled holes in the bottom and filled it with her special potting mix, which allows water to drain all the way through the container. Eli and his siblings enjoy picking berries from the barrel.
