The Peabody-Burns Warriors bi-district football game Tuesday against Osborne will be broadcast live on the Internet by AdAstraRadio.com.
The pregame show begins at 5:30 p.m., with the kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
Peabody Police Chief Bruce Burke presented council members with bids for a 2015 Ford Taurus and a 2015 Dodge Charger, each with a police package.
The bids were both from Midway Motors in Hillsboro. The quote for the Ford Taurus was $24,466 and the quote for the Dodge Charger was $26,295.
Halloween festivities in Peabody will begin early for the spooks and zombies at Peabody-Burns Elementary School. The students will parade through the hallways in their costumes beginning at 2:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
Following the parade, students will go to their classrooms for Halloween parties.
The good cooks of the Peabody Historical Society will be cooking up some comfort food to help make the candidate selection process a bit more palatable for Peabody voters.
Homemade chicken noodle soup, potato soup, and ham and beans with corn bread will be available along with homemade cinnamon rolls, pies, and cakes, coffee and tea.
The Peabody-Burns High School homecoming parade and pep rally that were canceled due to heavy rain on Oct. 10 will take place Thursday afternoon in conjunction with a scheduled spirit day for seniors.
A parade that includes homecoming floats will begin at 2:50 p.m. at the high school and follow the usual parade route south on Walnut St. to the main intersection at Second St.
After a decline in the second quarter of the fiscal year, Alco Stores Inc. announced on Oct. 13 that it would file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company intends to either sell or liquidate.
Chapter 11 bankruptcy is indicative of corporate restructuring, and shouldn’t have an immediate impact on the Hillsboro location, Store Manager Robert Berens said.
Ed Pilolla, 42, of Marion has joined the staff of Hoch Publishing Company.
Pilolla brings a lifetime of experience as a newspaper writer, photographer, and editor.
Dr. Paige Dodson, chief of staff at St. Luke Hospital, told District 1 hospital board members on Tuesday that staff is screening patients for the Ebola virus. However, Dodson downplayed the chances that Ebola would appear in Marion.
“If there is a case (of Ebola) in Kansas, it will probably hit elsewhere before it comes to Marion,” Dodson said. “Honestly, if Ebola comes here, it’s pretty much out of the bag. But we are doing our due diligence as best we can.”
Former kindergarten teacher Judy Kay Wenger Ehrlich, 68, died Saturday at her home in Emporia.
She was born Dec. 12, 1945, to Loyd V. and Betty (Bryan) Wenger at Horton. On July 26, 1968, she was married to Donald Ehrlich. She was a kindergarten teacher for Emporia USD #253 for 33 years.
Former bank chairman and co-op manager Marvin Dale Esau, 84, of Walton died Saturday at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Bethel College Mennonite Church in North Newton, with burial at Walton Cemetery following the service. Visitation is today from 5 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Petersen’s Funeral Home.
Janet “Diane” Hett Toews, 68, of Canton died Friday at Hospice House of Reno County.
She was born Sept. 27, 1946, to Don and Dolores Hett in Marion. She married George William Toews on Dec. 11, 1966.

Cristina Peterson of Lincolnville was taking almost 350 units of insulin a day two years ago, but her diabetes remained out of control. Her doctor sent her to an endocrinologist in April 2013 in an attempt to stabilize her blood sugar, which was sky high. She weighed 230 pounds.
‘The doctor told me, ‘If you don’t do something, you are going to die,’” she said.

As I write this on Monday night, the weather still looks great for trick or treating downtown from 5 to 7 p.m. on Halloween night at the annual “Trunk or Treat.” Included in the festivities this year will be a haunted house and pumpkin-carving contest sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary during the same hours in the Legion Hall. Admission to each is a container of non-perishable food that will be donated to the Peabody Food Bank.
Gray paint flaking off the single-story house welcomed me to Marion. I hadn’t painted a house since college, which was 20 years ago.
My wife and I and our toddling daughter had just moved from Los Angeles to Marion in August. It was a little bit of a hectic move, stuffing our worldly possessions in our car and U-Haul trailer and driving from the West Coast to Kansas. My wife was excited about moving back home, and my daughter and I were excited to have a rural adventure.

Marion County Democratic Women got a little rowdy waving semi-sharp, pronged objects in their hands Friday before lunch at Marion Senior Center while they celebrated National Fork Day.
“People brought in their forks and we brandished them high as we sang ‘The Fork Song,’” Janet Bryant said.
The Peabody Achievers 4-H Club met at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. The meeting was called to order by vice president Cody Parmley. Colton Gossen and Tanner Parks led the flag salute. The minutes were read by secretary Corin Parmley and approved.
The Marion County Farm Bureau Association gave a $30 donation to the club for upcoming activities.
Herbs and soups will be the focus of a workshop at 10 a.m. Nov. 15 and 16 at the Villa on the Prairie in Florence.
Guests will learn to make soups designed to build strong bones. The cost is $25.00.

The Peabody-Burns Warriors prevailed 42-34 at Burlingame on Friday despite an unsettled atmosphere that included miscues, penalties, fumbles, and interceptions. Gage Claassen intercepted a Burlingame pass with less than a minute to play to give the Warriors a chance to kneel down twice and end the game.
“That pick was huge,” head coach David Pickens said. “He read it perfectly.”
The Peabody-Burns High School Fall Athletic Banquet will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 in Brown Gymnasium.
The event, which honors participants in football, volleyball, and cheerleading, will be a dessert banquet.
